Emotional Literacy Activities

These activities are designed to help you slow down and pay attention. You’ll reflect on your own experiences, think about how social media affects your mood, and learn how to better understand both your emotions and the emotions of others online.

Scroll and Reflect Activity

Scroll for 10 minutes (or think about your recent screen time), then reflect on what you saw and how it made you feel. This helps you connect your media use to your emotions.

Guiding Questions:

  • What types of content did you see the most? (people, trends, news, ads, etc.)
  • How did you feel while scrolling? (excited, bored, anxious, happy, insecure, etc.)
  • Did any post stand out to you? Why?
  • Did you compare yourself to anyone or anything you saw?
  • Did anything make you feel better about yourself? Worse?
  • Did your mood change from before you started scrolling to after?
  • Did you feel in control of your scrolling, or did it feel automatic?
  • Would you choose to see more or less of this type of content?

I-Spy

Look at a set of images showing a “highlight reel” (what is posted) versus a possible “reality” behind it. Your job is to analyze what’s shown, what’s missing, and how it might affect how people feel.

Guiding Questions:

  • What is the post trying to show or communicate?
  • What emotions does the highlight reel make you feel? (jealous, inspired, pressured, etc.)
  • What is happening outside the frame that we don’t originally see?
  • What details could be edited, staged, or left out?
  • How might the person posting actually be feeling in real life?
  • How does seeing this kind of post affect how you view your own life?
  • Why do people choose to share moments like this?
  • Is this post more about expressing reality or creating an image?

**These are scenarios, not always the reality behind a post.**
